Commercial Vehicle Specification
Most companies operate a number of commercial vehicles and many have distribution fleets.

26Many of these ancillary operators are not finding things easy because of continual cost increases and operational difficulties. Commercial vehicles require an extraordinary amount of attention especially if they are not the core business.

Matters must be kept under control in respect of the following: -

    a) Specifying proven vehicles for specific jobs.
    b) Specifying correct body construction and accessories i.e. cranes, tailgates, etc.
    c) Price negotiations at manufacturer level.
    d) Individual vehicle assessment.
    e) Maintenance costs.
    f) Servicing costs.
    g) Dealer support.
    h) Finance and maintenance programmes.
    i) Usage standards.
    j) Projected effective in-service life, etc, etc.

Some central body must be established to set up and control the necessary procedures. These should be carefully evaluated and included in the fleet operating procedures.

Standard Vehicle specification forms should be developed for different vehicles in conjunction with the manufacturers to ensure standard build criteria. Engineering drawings should also be produced and retained on file for vehicle ordering and build.
